Spring Camping and Field Sports – Getting Ready for the Season Ahead

At this time of year as the weather gets brighter, it is the perfect time to think about camping. While the temperatures go up, conditions can still be unpredictable with cool mornings, dampness and the occasional period of rain. This means that being properly equipped is essential – particularly when camping remotely or hill walking. Selecting the best gear makes sure your time outdoors is spent enjoying the experience rather than dealing with avoidable issues, or others worrying about your safety.

When you are planning your next trip outside, it is important to check over your equipment before leaving. Keeping your kit clean, dry and stored safely will extend its lifespan, often significantly, and make sure it stays in good working order.

Camping in Spring

Spring camping is all about balance. Travelling light is important – often vital in these environments but not at the expense of comfort or your safety. The ground is often still wet from winter and weather is very unpredictable at points, so a high-quality tent and groundsheet are essential. Practical sleeping gear and a reliable heat source are also a must, especially for colder Highland evenings.

Lighting, cooking equipment and multi-purpose tools are also important. Durable cookware and compact stoves make life easier when you are camping, while torches and headlamps are necessary for those darker early mornings and evenings.

Sleep

So you have your tent… you cannot just sleep like that though. Especially on uneven ground. That’s where we come in – we have quality, comfortable airbeds and sleeping bags in stock that ensure you have a good night’s sleep – whether you are on an uneven field, camping on a mountain or at the beach – comfortability wont be a problem.

Eating

After a long days walking, putting up the tent and blowing up your air bed – you are all going to need some food. Even on a short camping trip, it is key to have enough snacks to last you so you are energised and prepared for the worst if you got stuck for longer. This is especially vital when hill walking off trails or remotely. Why not purchase a gas stove to ensure you can cook food quickly? You can also stock up on cookware, mugs and cutlery so you can enjoy the food – and savour it for the cold night ahead. We also have cool boxes to keep your drinks, and food cold on the way.

Let There be Light

Lighting. This is something people surprisingly forget or overlook. Having powerful torches, and lamps are essential when camping – whether you need to walk back to the car to grab something, go to the toilet or just a wonder – it’s essential you have light to check where you are walking, and so others know where you are in case you trip. The spare torch in the house that’s decades old will not do – powerful light is essential/ We suggest a head torch for each person, and one or two lanterns depending on how many there are of you – and how big your camp is. These are fantastic to keep on when hurdling around so the headtorches are not glaring at your face – and it provides centralised light that isn’t isolated to one person.

MUST HAVE ADDOONS

In the highlands, the midges can be intense. Very intense. Swarms of thousands appear and if you aren’t ready, it can be a very uncomfortable and frustrating experience – even if it’s a short walk. It’s essential to have the right gear – we have an anti-insect category with everything you need like head nets, repellent and all the way to tick removers when going through long grass and bracken.

if hiking, walking poles & a compass can help ensure safety via direction and grasp your surroundings – and the pole can be essential for helping with those steep never-ending terrains.
